European leg of the DP World Tour, namely the Turkish Airlines Open, took place at Carya Golf Club. Prior to the awards ceremony, the Minister of Youth and Sports, Dr. Osman Aşkın Bak, held a press conference to provide information to the media.
During the briefing, Minister Bak emphasized the significance of the Turkish Airlines Open golf tournament for sports tourism, stating, “Here, athletes have been competing for four days. This event holds great importance, particularly in terms of sports tourism. I had participated in this event during my previous tenure as well. We always give substantial importance to sports tourism, which is a part of this government’s policy. Over the last 23 years, under the leadership of our president, numerous investments have been made in Turkey, including many sports facilities, stadiums, indoor pools, and sports halls. Thanks to these investments, our country has hosted various international sports organizations. We have successfully carried out events such as world and European championships. Golf is among the most-watched sports globally and attracts interest from various audiences. It encompasses crucial aspects such as strategy, psychological management, patience, and techniques. Given the extensive tourism potential of Antalya and our country, it is also vital to attract tourists with high income levels through sports tourism. Golf is a relaxing and enjoyable activity, and although it is not widespread, there are serious efforts to promote it. In other countries, this sport is more common, and I hope to see more of our athletes participating in the Olympics in the future. Today, seven athletes participated, one of whom was Leon Kerem Açıkalın, who made us proud with a significant achievement for the first time. I also had the chance to chat with him.”
‘WE THANK THE TURKEY GOLF FEDERATION AND TURKISH AIRLINES’
Minister Bak pointed out that they were hosting an event viewed by approximately 650 million people in 175 countries, adding, “I would like to thank the Turkey Golf Federation and Turkish Airlines. Turkish Airlines is our country’s flag carrier and an important brand. The support of this brand is crucial for organizing such events. As the Ministry of Youth and Sports, we provide substantial support for sports tourism. We contribute to many events organized by our federations. This event, which is watched in 175 countries, is incredibly significant for promoting Turkey and Antalya. Increasing the number of golf courses is among our goals. It is important to enhance the number of golf courses in major cities like Istanbul, Ankara, and Izmir, where business activities are concentrated. These types of courses provide an essential environment for high-level executives to conduct business meetings. Following this event, which saw participation from 150 athletes from 30 different countries, we will continue with further processes. It is essential to note that significant events are being held to promote a sports culture in Turkey. The 2032 European Football Championship will be co-hosted with Italy, and the infrastructure and stadiums are ready for this. Additionally, we will host the 2026 UEFA Europa League Final and the 2027 Conference League Final in our country. Significant investments have also been made in basketball. I believe that there will be successful events in golf in the future as well. Our primary goal is to promote our country through sports tourism, showcase our sports potential, and increase tourism revenue. We are in a position to successfully carry out top-tier tournaments. Antalya is accustomed to such events, and it is absolutely possible to hold them in other provinces. We appreciate the contributions of the golf federation and its management, as they have made significant efforts to realize this event. The brand value of Turkish Airlines is crucial, and so is our country’s brand value. The players here expressed their satisfaction with the service and natural beauty. I look forward to seeing everyone at upcoming tournaments as we continue to progress strongly on the path of sports tourism in Turkey.”
